It’s like my car, I don't service it myself, I take it to the garage - Howard Nelson Bursar, Trent College

- Fragmented supply chain
Reducing Costs By £10,000 Per Year
Trent College’s initial challenge will be familiar to all financial managers, Howard Nelson, college Bursar, explains: “Print costs got onto my radar because I had a clear overspend on consumables.”
The college owned a fleet of disparate desktop printers as well as some Kyocera multifunctionals from Reprotec. Analysis by Howard, a professional accountant, revealed that moving print workload from printers and photocopiers to multifunctionals would save around £10,000 per year.
The change was simple to achieve. Reprotec installed new Kyocera multifunctionals in key locations such as the main school office, staff common room, library and Sixth Form Work & Resources Centre and existing print work was moved their way.
Reduced running costs were only one part of Reprotec’s financial proposition.
Service Beyond Value
Trent College’s purchasing process looks beyond price.
Service - “Knowing that if there is an issue, Reprotec are going to be there is just as important. I wanted to know that I could trust the person I was dealing with”, says Howard.
A process has been established whereby the college’s staff can call Reprotec directly with their questions. Not only is it important that the college’s IT department is freed from print-related issues, it’s essential that the multifunctionals are supported by specialists. Reprotec offer out-sourced support for document systems.
A Streamlined Supply Chain
When Howard started at Trent College, its procurement of document systems was haphazard. There were printers and photocopiers from numerous suppliers and multifunctionals from different sources too.
The latest Kyocera devices have also expanded the range of facilities staff and students can use. The college can be less restrictive towards student printing because the costs are now so much lower.
Documents that used to be printed externally - fillers, for example - are now produced internally.
“The next step”, says Howard, is to ask “so, what else can we do”. I’m sure Reprotec will be able to help us.”
